Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 v6: An MVP’s View

Earlier this year, Veeam released the latest version of their Microsoft 365 backup solution, and I am excited for some of the features that made it in V6! On May 6, I was invited by Veeam to talk about two of the awesome features that made it in the latest version of the product, and you can listen to the video embedded below, but for those of you who prefer to just read a summary, this blog post is for you!

To start off, many studies have shown that this year, backup solutions are gaining traction faster than ever! From my experience, in the past two years, many organizations were forced into remote work, and many IT teams had to put all their efforts into migrating workloads and content to the cloud, leaving some governance and compliance details behind. Today, those same companies now focus on governance and compliance, and many of them are asking themselves, do we need a backup solution in Microsoft 365? The short answer is probably yes, but you can read more on why in this other resource.

Back to the topic of Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 v6 — my favorite feature in V6 is the Self-Service restore capabilities. One of my goals is always to empower end users to do more, all while keeping content secure! Traditionally, as soon as a restore was mentioned, it has always been a process of

  1. Open a support ticket
  2. Wait a few days for IT to get to it
  3. Hope you still need that document before it gets restored!

And believe me, from an IT Pro perspective, this wasn’t fun either. There is no fun restoring files that users accidentally deleted — we want to spend more time doing greater things! This is why I love the Self-Service functionality, it empowers end users to restore content, without needing to go trough IT, all while being a system that is configured with the right permissions! This makes users more productive, and IT an enabler in the organization, all while following compliance standards and regulations!

Another topic we talked about was using the object backup copy functionality of Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 v6. With the existing capabilities, Veeam allowed you to back up your Microsoft 365 content not only in object storages like Azure, AWS and cloud providers, but anything S3 compatible! With version 6, you can now configure policies to copy these backups to low-cost object storage, like AWS Glacier, Glacier Deep Archive and Azure Archive. This feature will enable businesses to save a lot in storage costs for long-term backups, all while keeping those backups accessible if needed!

We were joined by over 60 users from 10 different countries in the Friday Tech Bites — and I want to thank Veeam again for having me during this call! If you missed it, you can still watch it on YouTube over here!
