Utilize Object Lock to keep data safe and unchanged with NetApp

It’s extremely important for businesses to protect their data against threats such as ransomware, malware and insider threats, because as history shows, these threats are continuing to happen. Viruses are attacking businesses more frequently and with more advanced functionality, attaching itself to critical data. This is something we hear and read about all the time, with no company being immune to a cyberattack and data deletion. Luckily, technology today continues to innovate and evolve to combat these threats and ensure your data is available for every scenario.

Veeam and NetApp have a long history of partnership that has allowed customers to leverage powerful storage with Modern Data Protection. Whether it be leveraging NetApp’s snapshots for quick backup and restores, utilizing E-Series for backup storage or utilizing S3 Object Lock with StorageGRID, NetApp gives you options when it comes to protecting your data. Since ransomware is top-of-mind for many IT professionals, lets discuss how Veeam and NetApp can maintain business continuity with their joint solution.

Turnin’ it up with immutability

Immutability is a word that we have been hearing A LOT lately. For some, this may be a new term, but for others they probably have a good idea what it means and how to implement it. For those of you unfamiliar with the term, it means once data is created, it can’t be modified or deleted. When using immutability with backup storage, you can set a time period on how long you want data to remain unchanged, safe from being modified or deleted. The thought is, when setting up immutability on your backup storage to protect your data, if a ransomware attack or deletion occurred, this data would have been left unchanged and safe to restore. To achieve this with Veeam Backup & Replication, you can use a supported Linux distribution as a simple repository on premises or it can be utilized from end to end with the Scale-out Backup Repository (SOBR).

The above diagram shows how you can implement the Scale-out Backup Repository with NetApp.  Within this diagram, there are two tiers, the Performance Tier, (used for fast access to data), and the Capacity Tier (long-term storage). The Performance Tier is set up as Linux Hardened Repository with NetApp E-Series Storage. The Hardened Linux Repository allows you to keep data stored immutable, allowing you to keep the backup files stored safe from being modified or deleted. The Hardened Repository with a compliant configuration meets the requirements for non-rewritable, non-erasable storage as specified by SEC 17a-4(f), FINRA 4511(c), and CFTC 1.31 (c)-(d) regulations.

The Capacity Tier is where you offload backup files for long-term retention. Setting this tier up with the NetApp StorageGRID with S3 Compatible Object Lock provides the ability to utilize immutability in the Capacity Tier, keeping backup files safe from start to end. This allows you to utilize software-defined storage that can be geo-distributed with S3 compatible object capabilities. StorageGRID helps comply with regulations with different features that allow for write once read many (WORM) retention, access control policies, encryption and audit trails.
